Circuit intégré Vol. 1.’DAT RAYON / FOQL / RNA2 / GAAP KVLT

In the interest of cosmic (kosmische?) balance, Zoharum, the label known among other things for its meticulously curated reissues, flagshipped by a stupendous chronological enhancement of Rapoon’s oeuvre (currently up to its third double volume) has initiated a new series showcasing young, barely-recorded artists “working in the field of broadly-defined electronic music.” The title Circuit Intégré is a doff of the cap to the Prospective 21e Siècle series released by Philips in the late sixties and early seventies. The delightfully complex, flowchart artwork unfolding over all six panels is a joy to behold. Promising to present three projects each time, volume one actually features four: Dat Rayon, separate contributions by two members of musical collective NZLD.pl (short for “Niebezpieczne Związki” [Dangerous Liaisons], a musical collective or self-styled “state of mind”), and Gaap Kvlt. All are based in Poland.
Five Polish-titled tracks by the industrial-inspired Dat Rayon (not exactly as in musically, he’s from the heavy-lifting town of Gdańsk and is also hung up on decrepit Detroit) roll out on a conveyor belt with Fordian efficiency, an oblique take on ambient texture and dub techno. Dat Rayon’s beats have a delectable crunchiness and its melodic restraint only tempts the listener in closer, perhaps too close to the machinery. Compares very favorably with the heavy, hyperminimalistic beats and tragic atmospherics of the denizen of another seat of industry fallen on hard times, Birmingham´s Mick Harris (cf. e.g. Hednod Sessions and his work as Quoit and The Weakener).
Two propulsive pieces by FOQL follow, the wood-quivering, cello-deep “Not Lost Till It’s Gone” and “Poseur Face,” where the drums go into anaphylactic shock as a catchy, faux-Radiophonics melody is gleefully picked out. RNA2, the second member of NZLD.pl appearing here, offers three pieces, nasty, filthy beats accompanying samples from instruction tapes on firearm maintenance and electromagnetic conductors, and, on “Lonely Man with a Sick Mind,” a symphony of tinkling, chiming metal and brutal, steel beams caught up together in the whirlwind.
Gaap Kvlt, purveyor of “post industrial haunted bass,” who debuted on Monotype Records with Void, creates ambient atmospheres that eschew narrativity in favor of the moodiest of mood. “Visitant” and “Huun” crackle with subtle, electric portent; “Nebula” is space music from Mars, if Mars had been colonized by the Byzantines; “Rise” is just plain scary.
An auspicious beginning to a series with significant inertial force.

Zoharum wzięli na warsztat ambientowo/industrialno/eksperymentalne brzmienia – Dat Rayon, FOQL, RNA2 i GAAP KVLT to cztery różne spojrzenia na gatunek.
Dat Rayon pisze o sobie fajne rzeczy, których ja nie słyszę w jego muzyce pewnie dlatego, że nie jestem wielką fanką motoryzacji. Tworzy podobno ścieżki do nieistniejących filmów drogi, inspirowanych amerykańską inżynierią samochodową lat 60-tych i 70-tych: tu przynajmniej moja wyobraźnia działa na tyle, żeby sobie jakoś do tego spokojnego, leniwego, pełnego industrialnych dźwięków krajobrazu muzycznego dopasować masywne Mustangi, futurystyczne Corvetty i hipisowskie po wieki Volkswageny. Być może „Wypadek na A1” faktycznie jest utworem o wypadku, dla mnie to raczej fantazja na temat zbieranych z kosmosu sygnałów. Zamiast motoryzacji słyszę tu zimnowojenny wyścig, kto pierwszy Marsie, pustki bez grawitacji i próby nawiązania kontaktu z innymi cywilizacjami na galaktycznej autostradzie. Co w pewnym sensie sprawia, że tych kilka utworów naprawdę działa na wyobraźnię. Intrygujący minimalizm dla miłośników klimatów Haxan Cloak.
FOQL i RNA2 to współautorzy innych projektów, takich jak Niebezpieczne Związki czy Kolektyw Ebola. FOQL jest cholernie przyjemne dlatego, że dla odmiany ma melodię i dużo rytmu – nawiązuje do Coil, miksuje minimalne techno z industrialem i psychodelą. „Not Lost Till It’s Gone” to naprawdę fantastyczny minimal, podobnie jak „Poseur Face”: niepokojący, hipnotyzujący, z elementami plemiennego bębnienia doskonale pasującymi do syntezatorowych plumkań a’la awangarda lat 70-tych. RNA2 idzie w surowe i bardziej industrialne tereny – utwory są krótkie i brutalne, dużo w nich drgającego basu, syntezatorowych wycieczek, urywanych sygnałów i sampli głosów, hałasu pracującej fabryki (popisowy „Lonely Man with a Sick Mind”).
Wreszcie Gaap KVLT idący w ślady Demdike Stare i Haxana Cloaka – trochę straszny, dobry do słuchania w ciemności materiał, który prowadzi słuchacza prosto w tunele opuszczonych kopalni, do porzuconych miast sowieckiej rewolucji industrialnej, wreszcie do jakiegoś siódmego, nieznanego wymiaru. W każdym razie kontakt z innym światem w tej czy innej formie. Wprasowują w kompozycje, a to bębny i dzwony („Nebula”), które nadają im szamańskiej atmosfery przedziwnej, kosmicznej mantry, a to znowu elektryczne sprzężenia, które łudząco przypominają padający deszcz.
Artystów zebranych na płycie Zoharum nietrudno wyobrazić sobie na scenie eksperymentalnej na Offie czy na Unsoundzie, na festiwalach takich jak Incubate albo Le Guess Who – na 24-hour drone party na przykład. Eksplorują te same obszary, co całkiem pokaźna grupa eksperymentalno/dronowo/ambientowych artystów, którym większość szanujących się hipsterskich festiwali zapewnia kawałek programu w ostatnich latach. Więc trop jest dobry – materiał ciekawy, choć nieodkrywczy. Jest za kogo trzymać kciuki.

El sello más laureado dentro del experimental gestado en Polonia, Zoharum, vuelve a cautivar a su público con la edición de una nueva saga de volúmenes compilatorios. “Circuit Intégré Volume 1 – A Compilation Of Contemporary Electronica” es una sugerente propuesta ambientada en la saga discográfica que la marca Philips crease durante las décadas de los sesenta y setenta del siglo pasado.
A muchos les sonará extraño, pero Philips en aquellos años dio para todo, incluso para publicar electrónica, tanto clásica como experimental. Ente la plétora de artistas más destacados de este sello podríamos hallar al colosal Pierre Henry, uno de los responsables de la conocida música concreta.
La idea de Zoharum ha sido rescatar la esencia de aquellos -para su época- transgresores sonidos, focalizándola en una renovada cartera de artistas de origen polaco. Para ello se ha escogido a un interesante tríptico de músicos. El primero de ellos es Dat Rayon, conocido por su espectacular “Motor City”, un fantástico CD que analizamos hace un par de años en Mentenebre, y que animamos fervientemente a ser escuchado. Dat Rayon vuelve a ejemplificar su elegante estilo en cinco cortes marcados por las percusiones esquemáticas aderezadas con líneas de sueños sumergidos en el océano. Una maravillosa propuesta para perderse en el submundo de la inconsciencia. ‘Inne Ograniczenia’ o ‘Bez Tablic’ son dos de las más sugerentes propuestas insertas en este disco compartido.Various – “Circuit Intégré Volume 1 – A Compilation Of Contemporary Electronica”
NZLD.pl Es un colectivo polaco con tintes altamente lisérgicos integrado por varios músicos. Dos de ellos se dan cita en “Circuit Intégré”: FOQL y RNA2. El primero nos regala un par de cortes de complexión progresiva, siempre rítmica, nutridos con melodías cerradas y coloreadas a base de oscilaciones, además de nuevas líneas acústicas que sugieren gran dinamismo, como es el caso de ‘Not Lost Till It’s Gone’. El segundo, RNA2, se escora más hacia un industrial dislocado y epiléptico, con carga de loops y ritmos envolventes. ‘Magnetic Cores’ es una muestra perfecta.
El último exponente de “Circuit Intégré” es Gaap Kvlt. Este proyecto es la elucubración en solitario de frutos posteriores como Ixora. El estilo de Gaap Kvlt se encuadra dentro del minimal oscuro, sin muchas concesiones a la ambivalencia, bases taxativas salpimentadas con efectos en constante serpenteo, presentes en ‘Visitant’; o tonadas más experimentales con inclinaciones tribales, como ‘Nebula’; o sencillamente abstractas, materializadas en ‘Huun’, un corte hipnótico e incandescente que hace levitar a los cuerpos.
Desde Mentenebre deseamos que “Circuit Intégré Volume 1 – A Compilation Of Contemporary Electronica” tenga una pronta continuación, ya que la actual oferta resulta más que prometedora. La edición se ha presentado en formato ecopack de seis paneles, ornamentada con una ilustración en la que se combina el esquematismo con la naturaleza embrionaria.

Darkroom:
La polacca Zoharum inaugura con questa compilation una serie di uscite dedicate alla promozione di giovani progetti connazionali orbitanti intorno alla sfera dell’elettronica sperimentale. L’idea prende ispirazione dalla famosa serie della Philips “Prospective 21e Siècle”, con cui la label promuoveva sul finire degli anni ’60 i maggiori sperimentatori europei. Ad aprire il lavoro sono cinque tracce di Dat Rayon, singolare nome con all’attivo due album molto interessanti basati sul concept della costruzione e della meccanica automobilistiche. Sul piano tecnico si lavora estraendo rumori metallici e freddi dal loro habitat originario per ricreare anomalie tonali astratte che assumono spesso forma ritmica. Ne scaturiscono sentori glitch o dub-minimali spesso piegati ad esigenze strutturali di natura post-industriale. Il suono, aspro e secco, risulta utile per video-installazioni e cede a prevedibili afflati dronici soltanto nell’ultima traccia. I successivi cinque pezzi sono firmati rispettivamente da FOQL, al secolo Justyna Banaszczyk (due pezzi), e da RNA2, ovvero Jaroslaw Grzelak (tre pezzi), artisti che collaborano in pianta stabile nei duo Kolektyw Ebola e Marburg. Con alle spalle pochissime release, Justina e Jaroslaw presentano in un caso sonorità dalle fattezze wave e dall’appeal accattivante, nell’altro ritmiche frammentate a metà tra break e techno basate su improvvisazioni e giochi tonali spiazzanti alla ricerca di un’originalità ad ogni costo. Il CD si chiude con i quattro brani di Gaap Kvit, autore che ha già dato alle stampe due dischi e qualche singolo: il suo stile, estremamente cupo, è fatto di astrattismi sordi e circolari che rifuggono l’ambient nel tentativo di creare un buco nero senza fine. Ad eccezione del pezzo conclusivo che si attesta in parte su peculiarità filmiche, gli altri presentano una totale assenza di luce, tesa ad illustrare il nulla galattico tra abrasività e sovrapposizioni di materia audio. Nel complesso l’intero progetto “Circuit Intégré” si presenta di grande interesse: in questo primo capitolo i nomi coinvolti non cedono a soluzioni preconfezionate, sebbene in minima parte possano emergere influenze dai generi più in voga, e l’esito finale risulta incisivo alle orecchie di chi cerca qualcosa di nuovo. Confezione in digisleeve apribile ed artwork vintage che si ricollega alla suddetta serie della Philips.

Based upon Philips’ “Prospective 21e Siècle”, a series of albums documenting electronic music, this new project by Zoharum wants to document new young polish projects. This first volumes present tree projects: Dat Rayon, a project of the post-club electronica; NZLD.pl, represented by FOQL and RNA2, a project of analogue electronics (a music in the tradition of ’90 electro); Gaap Kvlt a project mixing ambient and drone.
The five Dat Rayon’s tracks could be described under the term ‘minimal’: “PrÄdkoÅÄ Dopuszczalna” is based upon sparse, carefully constructed, samples; “Droga krajowa 7” stays suspended upon the beats; “Wypadek na A1” is almost a techno track; “Inne Ograniczenia” is dub oriented with his echoes; “Bez tablic” is an ambient track.
A sound more focused on the dance floor is the FOQL’s: “Not Lost Till It’s Gone” features a catchy melody upon a danceable beat and “Poseur Face” is even closer to synth pop. RNA2, as FOQL part of NZLD.pl, is a similar project but is more focused on methodically developed drum parts: “Cycle Of Functioning”, “Magnetic Cores” and “Lonely Man with Sick Mind” are closer to EBM as the main loops are juxtaposed to repetitive beat of undoubtable impact.
Gaap Kvlt sounds as the most sophisticated project: “Visitant” is ambient track based on subtle variation of sounds; “Nebula” is an ambient tracks developed upon drones; “Huun” is based on small noises; “Rise” is focused on synth.
The overall rating is an average of a bunch of factor: the youth of the project with their evident influence; the heterogeneity of musical output, a choice of the curator Michal Porwet, which escapes boredom; the perceptible quality of some musical intuition. It’s not ground breaking as the projects stand into a sort of tradition of their genre but, in the near future, Gaap Kvlt could present something remarkable. An unripe release.

Necroweb:
Mittels der vorliegenden Publikation aus der Manufaktur Zoharum Records, findet eine neue Compilation Reihe ihren Anfang, womit man junge Hoffnungsträger unterstützt, deren stilistisches Fundament entsprechend der Ausrichtung des Labels geht. Sprich, Ambient und Electronica prägen das Klangmuster von Zoharum und zum Auftakt gebührt drei Vertretern nun die Ehre, sich von einer guten Seite zu präsentieren. Den Anfang macht DAT RAYON, ein in Gdańsk beheimatetes Projekt, dessen Inspiration in der Automobilindustrie liegt, speziell der Industriestadt Detroit. So manchem Hörer dürfte dies Projekt geläufig sein, hat man doch in der Vergangenheit schon starke Kost (“Motor City”) präsentieren können, was aber hier nicht so wirklich gelingt. Ambient, Dub und minimaler Techno halten sich da die Waage, der Charakter ist als ruhig zu benennen, wobei aber wohlgemerkt erst mit dem letzten Stück die wahre Stärke serviert wird. FOQL und RNA2 sind Teil von NZLD.pl und haben schon zahlreiche kleinere Formate (Tapes, EPs und Samplerbeiträge) freigegeben. Ihre Musik ist gezeichnet von analogen Elementen aus Elektro, Techno, Drone und Ambient. Beide bieten jeweils ein einzelnes Stück sowie eine gemeinschaftliche Kooperation an, wobei das Spektrum von warmen Electronica bis zur agilen Lebendigkeit abgedeckt wird, die mitunter auf gelungener Taktgebung beruht – stark! Für den Abgang hat sich GAAP KVLT gefunden, wobei dieses Projekt Field Recordings mit Drone und orientalischem Einschlag birgt und damit auch eigene Akzente zu setzen vermag, wenngleich die Darbietungen auch etwas verhalten scheinen.
Fazit: “Circuit Intégré Vol.1″ mausert sich zu einer interessanten Reise, wobei alle Beteiligten auf ihre eigene Art und Weise zu gefallen vermögen. Es gilt gespannt zu sein, was uns Zoharum mit dem zweiten Akt vorlegen werden, denn ein starker Auftakt ist dieser Serie durchaus zu attestieren.

Dentro de la escena underground europea del siglo XXI, el prestigioso sello discográfico polaco ZOHARUM se ha convertido en eje editorial para los artistas de vanguardia y en referencia indiscutible para los melómanos entregados en cuerpo y alma al disfrute de las corrientes musicales más importantes nacidas en el Viejo Continente. Una nueva muestra del firme compromiso de Zoharum con el Arte y la Cultura Musical ha sido la presentación del extraordinario álbum “Circuit Intégré Volume 1 – A Compilation Of Contemporary Electronica” el pasado mes de junio, habiendo sido editado en formato digital y en CD edición limitada de 400 unidades en ecopak de tres paneles cuyo diseño, a cargo de Tomek Popakul, refleja muy claramente la fuente de inspiración tecnológica que ha dado vida a estos temas compuestos por FOQL, RNA2, Gaap Kvlt y Dat Rayon, este ultimo de sobra conocido por nuestros melómanos lectores tras la publicación de la reseña de su extraordinario álbum “MOTOR CITY”. Mentes privilegiadas dentro de la escena musical más innovadora, y cuyo fruto artístico ha vertebrado este glorioso álbum con catorce temas de fascinante audición e irresistible atracción sonora. Fértiles muestras de talento musical que darán comienzo con los cinco primeros temas firmados por Dat Rayon e inspirados en su pasión automovilística, adentrándonos en entornos sonoros experimentales donde la sincronicidad mecánica es palpable en “Prędkość Dopuszczalna”, corriendo por caminos abiertos a la automoción sobre la superficie terrestre en “Droga krajowa 7”, asistiendo al drama y a la tragedia humana tras el error al volante en “Wypadek na A1”, observando los márgenes en los cuales este mundo rodante se mueve en “Inne Ograniczenia”, o también sumergiéndonos en el caos de lo impredecible que da sentido al magnífico tema “Bez tablic”.
Posteriormente, será la inmersión en los dos temas compuestos por FOQL los que nos cautiven, siendo la fuerza sonora de “Not Lost Till It’s Gone” la que resplandezca por primera vez en esta obscuridad hasta ahora recorrida, reafirmándose en “Poseur Face” su espíritu ecléctico basado en la fusión analógica y digital. A continuación, los tres temas de RNA2 presentarán características sonoras en la composición más avanzadas, conceptualmente hablando, ya sea a través de la posmodernidad electrónica de “Cycle Of Functioning” donde se deconstruyen las estructuras melódicas, o en las arrogantes texturas utilizadas como soportes en esta definición sonora innovadora mostrada en “Magnetic Cores” (¡¡¡Impresionante!!!), o en el elaborado perfilamiento musical del excelso tema “Lonely Man with Sick Mind” donde la sonoridad electrónica es capaz de provocar sensaciones de angustia, de estrés y de abandono existencial en este gélido entorno industrial. Finalmente, los cuatro últimos temas del álbum “Circuit Intégré Volume 1 – A Compilation Of Contemporary Electronica” llevarán el sello artístico de Gaap Kvlt, fundiendo en su crisol musical desde el estilo ambient al experimental, junto a pinceladas dark-ambient y el uso de drones, ofreciéndonos un abanico sonoro superlativo que dará comienzo con el tema “Visitant” y su pulsante esencia expansiva orientada a condicionar y subyugar la mente. Con “Nebula”, la visión artística se apoyará en planos melódicos más definidos y concretos donde los espacios adquieren una personalidad un tanto siniestra y desconcertante, presentando una indefinición sonora lúgubre en “Huun” como si fuera una instantánea tomada de las tinieblas del Érebo. Como cierre final, el tema “Rise” terminará alzando sus colosales pasajes melódicos hacia el cielo hasta perderse en la negrura de lo inconmensurable. Lo mejor de todo es que el espíritu de este álbum no se queda aquí, sino que esta edición se ha convertido en el inicio de una serie de álbumes que el sello discográfico Zoharum tiene pensado publicar, estando prevista una nueva entrega para el próximo año. “Circuit Intégré Volume 1 – A Compilation Of Contemporary Electronica”, álbum de vanguardia de audición eterna e intemporal. ¡¡¡Disfrútenlo!!!

Когда-то (если точнее, то с конца шестидесятых по середину семидесятых) под крылом концерна «Philips» существовал лейбл «Prospective 21e Siècle», выпускавший сочинения французских композиторов, посвятивших свое творчество изысканиям в электронной музыке. Издавались альбомы Ксенакиса, Пьера Анри, Бернара Пармеджани, Люка Феррари и других мастеров электроакустики. Нечто подобное решил реализовать польский лейбл «Zoharum», придумав «Circuit Integre», цикл компиляций, освещающих настоящее положение в польской электронной музыке. На первый диск вошли работы четырех проектов. Стартует «Volume 1» с треков «Dat Rayon», уже отметившегося на «Zoharum» вторым своим альбомом «Motor City». Там за основу была взята атмосфера упадка, царящая ныне в Детройте, некогда автомобильной столице США. Здесь эта тема развивается, но, на мой слух, охватывает ночное время суток, когда улицы затихают, конвейеры встают и, кажется, все погружается в тревожную тишину промышленной зоны. Но механизмы, даже выключенные, продолжают что-то делать в полной темноте: звучит мрачноватый, машинный гул, что-то где-то потрескивает, пульсирует очень медленный бит, словно злобствуя из-за того, что производственных мощностей не хватает ему для разгона. Получается насыщенный техногенный эмбиент. Или сильно заторможенный IDM. Звучит мрачновато. «FOQL» и «RNA2» являются частицами одного проекта, «NZDL.pl» , но также выпускают и сольные треки. Две композиции «FOQL» (кстати, автор – девушка, зовут Жустина Баназчук) – это пространство техно-бита, поверх которого пущены различные атмосферные звуки, из набора которых постепенно вырисовываются минималистические мелодии. Такого во всем мире создается бессчетными гигабайтами, но вот именно здесь эти композиции производят очень приятное впечатление – под их мощный напор еще не тянет танцевать, но их уже хочется услышать снова. «RNA2», в противовес трекам своей коллеги, рубит вещи пожесче, балансируя на грани rhythm’n’noise и техно, но в тотальное разрушение и «мясо», однако, он не скатывается. Самый классный его трек – «Lonely Man with Sick Mind», где, согласно названию, в равной степени правят «lonely» и «sick». Для музыки же «GAAP KVLT» больше подходит термин «sound art». Это тревожные звуковые абстракции, накрывающие с головой, то притворяющиеся безлюдными пустотами далекого космоса, то уходящие в шуршащий глитч и техно-трайбл, то задействующие элементы аналоговой ретро-электроники.
