Dodatkowo na krążku znalazł się też teledysk do utworu „From here to ruins”.

Projekt graficzny wykonał Praetorian.

Recenzje

Mroczna Strefa
Obrazki do „From Here To Ruins” zostały nakręcone w opuszczonym i mocno nadgryzionym zębem czasu budynku. Nic wybitnego, ale świetnie oddaje towarzyszące temu klipowi dźwięki. Podobnie zresztą jest z samą muzyką. A płytę mogę polecić głównie maniakom urbanistyczno-industrialnego dark ambientu.

Connexion Bizzare
While there may not seem to be that much happening over the 37-minute span that is Silesian dark ambient producer Hoarfrost’s debut release, „Ground Zero”, it quite rapidly becomes evident that this is entirely the idea: this album is intended to embody the concept of human existence as a disposable commodity. Minimalist though his approach may be, it carries with it an unexpected complexity within its associated atmospheric quality.
The album drags the listener on a journey through an abandoned, desolate wasteland. Degraded, rough electronic impulses stream across yawning chasms, leaving a distinct impression of sonic vertigo in their wake. Crackling, vague signal interference hints at forgotten communications (especially so on „Red Alert” – the only track to utilize any form of vocal sampling) while drawn-out bursts of static rip through the whole on winds of distortion. The included video for „From Here to Ruins” further reinforces this post-human, alien concept: a single viewpoint flashes across rubble and the detritus of a civilization long since consigned to history. Filmed in oversaturated greens and purples set against the dull grey of broken concrete, it carries with it a sense of not belonging, of being a visitor to the scene of some catastrophe – much like the feeling aroused by imagery of the outlying villages and towns around the Chernobyl site. Disaster, destruction and despair all vie for your attention, but it’s the overwhelming sense of loss that prevails – of human existence reduced to nothingness, all its fragility revealed in an instant of annihilation.
„Ground Zero” is thus a prime example of uneasy listening music. It is a musical representation of fallout and not something one can ever be comfortable with. It is thought provoking and unsettling, and this is why Hoarfrost will never be hugely popular. A select audience of pessimists will relate to its message, but most will simply wonder why nothing happens for nearly forty minutes, why there are no easily interpreted builds and breaks to dance to, and why they have an uncontrollable urge to drown their sorrows. If anything, „Ground Zero” is anti-ambient. Instead of creating atmosphere, it entirely destroys it.

ChainDLK
Distant cracklings, hisses, shattered concrete walls. Imagine to be underwater while a ship called America is sinking. Hoarfrost’s GROUND ZERO tries to make you live the 9/11 experience as you were one of the people that was under the ruins of the two towers while waiting for an helping hand. The six tracks of this album sound simply as that and for a better experience you have to listen to this in total darkness. I’m not going to talk about the album’s musicality as there isn’t any and even if this could be filed under the dark ambient/industrial genre, it isn’t because there’s no research of melody (even if there’s some on the closing track „Red alert”) nor of rhythm. Into the CD data partition you can also find an mpg video file for the track „From here to ruins”. No need to tell you that ruins (not the Ground Zero ones) are the only things that have been shot.

Kulturterrorismus
Without a Breath’, ‘From Here to Ruins’ & ‘Scene of the Fire’ ansprechen.

This is the debut album from this Polish solo project. And what amazing debut, “ Ground Zero” is a landscape developing from an unknown cataclysm, presenting ruins and debris of stell, dust flying in the air, rust slivers, tumbling down construction, where steel structures, bend and fold like a pack of cards…under such description HOARFROST, seems to have a culminating point in its personal development when creating music. Through 6 pieces of ambient /industrial expressionism, HOARFOST emanates all its most powerful sonic convergences, creating an album full of intense moments, and dark structures collapsing all time together to create a monumental release. “Requiem” is the prelude to the rest of the tracks. A perfect soundtrack to desolation due how music is developed here. Dense harmonies and a spirit of abandonment is revealed here. “Without A Breath” a cryptic, atmosphere is created through diverse soundscapes and a cutting edge atmosphere, without a doubt a dark impressive musical piece. Through “Dead Machines”, the voyage continues, but this time under more dense-drone structures and arrangements. “Ground Zero” is an album with so in deep structures converging all the time, so one of such aspects considered as highlight on this album. “From Here To Ruins”, is a constant flux of metal sounds, effects, analogue elements which creates an apocalyptic piece of desolation and despair. “Scene Of Fire” and “Red Alert” are the last tracks, both of them with impressive sonic artifacts developed in a proper way, due its massive structure and atmospheres handled here. Also, this release comes with a bonus video from the track “From Here To Ruins” in which through the visual side HOARFROST reveal us his visions using ruins, desolation and concrete structures which determinates the whole concept behinds “Ground Zero”.

Heathen Harvest
„Ground Zero” is the first full-length, yet short, recording by Polish artist Hoarfrost, unless you consider the free mp3 download of the short and middling EP, Dungeon, which we reviewed here at Heathen Harvest.
“Ground Zero” is an awkward listen that instantly has impact, with prejudgements already made and/or expected: couple that with sensory information whilst listening and it is even more so. The demesne of tumbling Americana is an interesting choice for a Polish artist but Hoarfrost does its best to capture the limits of the iconic liquefaction.
A forest of rust and stone, where deformed, yet detailed fauna gurgle and elusive breezes whisper sibilants snaking through vast bulks of decomposition. The verges of the dust storm are notably never reached among the tracks in Hoarfrost’s “Ground Zero”, them all keeping runnels of susurration like the clouds of choking ash and compressed stone. Each track sets a unique composition that while unified in their gauzy sound are noticeably displaced experiences of ground zero.
The ghosts of short wave radio flutter like the rain of burning debris in the distance only to then scream in frustration so incredibly close, which evokes a tang of the supernatural as only thousands of lives evicted at one moment could do. With atmospherics ranging from the echoing choke of smoke to the roaring of animated debris, Hoarfrost neatly attempt an honest evocation of such a palpably internationally felt event.
The album comes with a bonus video of “From Here to Ruins”, comprised of shaky cam imagery of looped ruins: not Ground Zero.
A tri-panel gatefold nurses the jewel base of the digipack in a satin full colour finish. Encrusted in the shrapnel of photographic ruins tastefully bleached and enlarged, the album’s artwork deftly mixes with its stark subject matter. Within the photography contrasts with odd and unexpected slices of youthful beauty, ala female photo shoot into the wasteland.

Gazeta Wyborcza
Hoarfrost to slaski reprezentant krajowej sceny dark ambientowej. Zgodnie z linia programowa gra muzyke mroczna i niepokojaca, wzbogacona industrialnymi odglosami. Sam nazywa swój nowy album „muzycznym obrazem zniszczenia wywolanego dzialaniem nieznanego kataklizmu”. Nic dziwnego, ze nielatwo sie tego slucha. Nie trzeba ogladac teledysku (choc mozna, bo klip do utworu „From here to ruins” dolaczono do plyty), by wyobrazic sobie swiat po owej destrukcji . Wystarczy rzut oka na zelbetowe ruiny z okladki.

Gothronic
Hoarfrost is a rather new project which started to release music around 2007. The project has released two albums on the netlabel Kaos Ex Machina Promotions, called ‘Dungeon’ and ‘The Girl Who Loves Tattoos’ (which was a split with Mrok). This is his debut on an optical format and it’s already on a real cd, no cdr.
The music is pretty interesting and good death-industrial, sometimes reminding me of Schloss Tegal meets Lustmord. The album contains 6 tracks and is around 37 minutes in duration, which is actually a perfect length for this album, not too short, but also not to long. The whole album does have a very cinematic feel to it, that’s why it sometimes reminds me somewhat of Lustmord. Together with a dark and obscure reality presence like Schloss Tegal is brilliant in creating. The album is what you’d expect from a dark-ambient/death-industrial release except that it’s of a very high quality for a debut album. The sounds are very dimensional and with a headphone listen you can really immerse yourself in the soundscapes. You can really feel the devastating industrial landscapes unfolding around your ears.
A very good and interesting debut release. If you very much liked Luasa Raelon’s ‘The Poison City’, on Eibon Records, then you will love this. I’m really looking forward to new output by this project. So, highly recommended!

Strefa zero okresla sie krajobraz powstaly na skutek nieznanego kataklizmu, gdzie industrialna przestrzen ulega calkowitej dezintegracji. Walace sie budowle, stalowe pogiete konstrukcje, rdza, metal i pyl. Slaski kolektyw Hoarfrost zainspirowany powyzszym zjawiskiem, stworzyl swoiste muzyczne obrazy tego poprzemyslowego widoku. Friedhof

Darklife
As far as death ambient/industrial works inspired by the demise of the planet -or regions thereof- are concerned, Ground Zero is certainly not a lone contender. Here the unfolding of the catastrophe is more notional than factual though, and in fact Ground Zero seems to deal with the aftermath and it must be stressed that human intervention is not part of it. Well, sonically speaking at least. It’s all too easy to associate this to the most creepily famous Ground Zero of our contemporary history, but there are no apparent references to that event in the noise-dust narration of Hoarfrost. As with most of these highly abstract sonic representations, the imagery evoked to the listener can be highly personal and to me Ground Zero is a perfectly standard apocalyptic picture, which could range from the Tour Eiffel folding onto itself to a massive earthquake in shaky Japan. A generic disaster, though, is no less a disaster and there’s little doubt that all the canons of pertinence to the category are well represented within this impressive 37-minute 6-track work. From here to Ruins is the core of the crumbling action, it’s where a real feels transpires of ongoing disaster, well rendered through excellent granular sound manipulation. The closing Red Alert finds hints of human presence in the form of distant confused voices and screams, but what strikes more about this work is that drama and sorrow are not achieved by means of endless drones, and the dynamism of the ruins even suggests all is well in this form after all. At least if seen from the other side of the fence. As there is obviously another side of the fence. After all, no good news for the humans does not necessarily mean no good news for what is left behind them. Now, here’s where I see Ground Zero working all too well. It instigates images and fantasies, none of them that cheerful, none of them necessarily of terminal pain either.
