’Paradies’ to najnowszy album projektu Niedowierzanie.

Niedowierzanie 'Paradies/Strade Senza Fine’ 2CD

Recenzje

Heathen Harvest
Niedowierzanie (a Polish word meaning “disbelief”) is the project of Léo Maury—a Frenchman based in Berlin, Germany. His discography includes five releases of his own and work with Hjärna and Mushroom’s Patience. Most Niedowierzanie releases, such as 2014’s Felicita, are adventurous but still adhere to traditional formats. Niedowierzanie’s Soundcloud profile proves Maury to be a capable musician as adept with electronica and sound collage as he is with accordion and cello. Only in live performance clips scattered around YouTube is there any indication of Maury as a full-blown experimentalist, hunching over a laptop like any other contemporary ambient musician, but sitting in order to cradle a mandolin in his lap.
But it wasn’t until Paradies that Maury, as Niedowierzanie, completely shed the constraints of accessibility to deliver a dense, difficult listening challenge. Acoustic instrumentation—mandolin, cello, accordion, harp—is present at every moment, creating the illusion that the music may eventually settle into sweet-sounding ambience. There is never any such release, though. Rather, we get suspenseful meandering passages that build gradually into frenetic walls of noise. These crescendos break away eventually, only to make way for sparser yet still-demanding, segments.
This is no mere noise effort, though. Niedowierzanie’s use of the aforementioned instruments adds distinguishing color to the entire album. The Mediterranean timbres mutate and mix with a variety of other sounds to create combinations that won’t be found in any other music. Still, there is little that is fun or pleasant about Paradies; there is a feeling here of a seaside holiday ruined by a series of anxiety attacks, yet this is no indictment of the music. There is an abundance of sonic candy out there for those who want it. At the same time, there is also an abundance of room for music that neglects the delivery of good feelings in favor of more sophisticated goals.
With all of this in mind, it is likely that Paradies is most suited for noise fans in search of something that’s a bit different. Anyone who might be willing to focus and maintain a clinical attitude will find Paradies an intricate listening experience, full of details that emerge only after several listens.
The other side of this, though, is that anyone interested in Niedowierzanie as an artist might want to save Paradies for later. Those who fall into that category should begin with his more friendly releases. Maury is a talented musician who is completely deserving of attention that he no doubt has failed to receive to this point. Paradies is simply not representative of Maury’s work overall, however. Instead, it is merely evidence that he has tools at his disposal that can allow him to make music of a type that few other sound artists could manage, a derivation of folk and ambient music with more ambition for experimentation than popular success. If he keeps at this style, Maury may find himself handicapped with a lack of mass appeal yet still successful in constructing something novel in the world of sound.

Vital Weekly:
A Frenchman with a Polish name who lives in Berlin: that’s who Niedowierezanie is. So far he released three slabs of vinyl and two cassettes and now releases a CD. He uses cello, accordion and mandolin to create his music, but also electronic manipulation. I had not heard his music before. The music covers a vast territory of interests so it seems; in the opening 'Neige Noire’ we hear the gentle sounds of the instruments and the likewise gentle electronic processing there of: a bit of stretching these sounds out. However already in the second piece, 'Credere’, things aren’t as gentle anymore. Here some kind of force enters the scene, things become louder, meaner but yet remain to have an acoustic feeling. Electronics play a bigger role in 'Irrizntzi’ while in 'Vous Voulez Ma Peau’ things get really loud: here too in an acoustic way but through the dense layering of electro-acoustic objects, drones from his instruments and electronics. Quite a tour de force in these six pieces. There is always a lot happening, sometimes leaning towards the electro-acoustic side of things, then a bit more ambient, and then, as easily the modern classical side. Niedowierezanie is never shy to use a lot of reverb in his music, which makes there not always room to breath in here. Overall the music of Niedowierezanie has quite a filmic character: one can easily see this used in a horror movie of some kind. Preferable one without scary monsters, but with just a doom 'n gloom atmosphere, a cafe in which the waiter slashes out and kills his customers. Every piece has that dramatic undercurrent. This is a release with heavy musical weight but also with some excellent refined beauty.

African Paper:

Darknation

ChainDLK:
Niedowierzanie is a french composer living in Berlin whose musical output is at the crossroad of modern classical, electronic music and folk. Most of the tracks are made out of acoustic instruments like cello, accordion and mandoline which are treated and juxtaposed creating subtle masses of drones.
The gentle notes of „Neige Noire” open this release and immerse the listener into a pit of layers of sounds centered upon a filtered accordion. „Credere” uses the same structure but it’s based on the mandolin and the cello. „Irrintzi” is a quiet tune which let emerge the more reflexive side of this musical output while „Vous Voulez Ma Peau” expose the most noisy side of this formula as it features distortions to be enjoyed at relatively high volume in the first part and are resolved in a crystal clear drone. „Les Horizons Perdus” mirrors this structure in a shorter form while „#9” closes this release with the hypnotic resonances of the acoustic instruments.
While it’s not a particularly impressive release in the realm of form, it has a sort of familiar feeling that gives this release an allure of something to hear whenever possible. A nice release.

Necroweb:

Santa Sangre:
I remember Niedowierzanie from their releases for Reue Um Reue. Though I thought that this project wasn’t active anymore, since after “Attendre” there were few other recordings, today the musician presents his new music through the Polish publishing house Zoharum.
Niedowierzanie has always followed rarely frequented paths. A strange, Polish name that I bet even the musician himself is unable to pronounce correctly (it means something like “disbelief”). An unusual use of live instruments, such as cello and accordion, as well as field recordings later processed electronically, cut and folded like a puzzle in a surreal, but ultimately having a deep sense material.
It’s no different in the case of “Paradies”, an album that consists of six tracks that draw from both ambient experimental music as well as folk or sometimes even chamber music. It would seem like a breakneck concoction, but despite the sound being so courageous in its experimentalism, the music is rather accessible; which does not mean it’s pleasant or easy to listen. Don’t be fooled by the idyllic image on the cover, nor the title of the album. Emotionally on some level, “Paradies” harmonizes with “Die Schlangenkönigin” by His Divine Grace, because its aura spreads Arcadia before my eyes, a quiet land where time stood still, which doesn’t know evil nor violence, but time is coming at it relentlessly, just like a war-civilization machine. Obviously Moonchild Erik used different, far more ascetic forms of expression, not to mention the fact that he focused almost exclusively on electronics. Minimum measures gave the maximum effect. Niedowierzanie’s sound is more complex, more organic and for me personally this is the ideal complementation of His Divine Grace CD, even though at first glance it seems that these are quite different different aural worlds. But the universe that they depict is the same, I think.
Warm, not clearly defined, but close to the southern parts of Europe. Italy, Spain, Portugal… Corsica, this is a good clue. Perhaps a contemporary, experimental variety of Novy Svet would sound similar. However don’t let these comparisons deceive you. These are rather general signposts, gently suggesting where you should direct your ears. Niedowierzanie has its own identity, its own idea of music, which, although I mentioned the names of two other projects, is quite original. Summer is slowly coming to an end, probably a few hot days are still ahead of us during the coming month or two, at least here, in Poland. Then autumn again, sometimes made of gold, more often gray and dirty. “Paradies” is the perfect music for a breakthrough of these two seasons, when we know that it will soon be dark and gloomy and we already miss the moment when the cycle will begin again, and we will be able to enjoy the sun once more. If we persevere.

Quartier 23:
