Tunguska Event

Santa Sangre:
The Tunguska Event happened about a century ago and generated debates and papers in a large number. The “largest impact event on or near Earth” that took place near the Tunguska River has since received several interpretations in popular culture.
Zoharum was contacted by the two noise-makers with the proposal of a record inspired by this theme. Eric Jarl is involved in Skin Area, Jarl and IRM and David Reed is an American ambient artist working with his two main projects, Envenomist and Luasa Raelon.
They compiled the Siberian cataclysm in 5 parts supposedly connected to different perspectives of sonic cartography. Having in mind the dark ambient surrealist sculptures, Skin Area’s “Rothko Field” and Envenomist’s “The Helix”, it’s no surprise that the present record debuts with highly quality dark ambient. Part I presents the slow-motioned cataleptic trip through the desolated territories attained by the mysterious plague. Arachnoid textures grasp on sleazy drones which are punctually stabbed down by echoing hammers.
The nightmarish journey enters on Part II on extraterrestrial areas suggested by alarming space frequencies that surround the mental faculties of the wanderer in a nimbus of paradoxical euphoria. Beeps and industrial hissings burst out from subtle drones, delivering images of radioactive swamps and generating deformed perceptions. Subsequent reflections enable the tracing of connections between the Tunguska event and the potential accident of an alien vessel that may have determined the terrible conflagration. Linear turbulent noises steam out from a changing background and climb high up to the nostrils, invading and alienating the mind. The supernatural atmosphere unravels a bleaker vision of electronics in the vein of Alphane Moon, where the magic is replaced by sinister, hostile, non-human ambiance which has aspects from Closing The Eternity and other Russian projects.
There is an immediate evidence of the cinematic expansion the music has here. The slow moving sounds of Part III delight by their Tarkovsky-ian placidity and fine modulation of scientific exactness. Any sense of the grotesque can hardly be felt, as the queer yantras bear little significance of what we call human. The sentiment is almost undefined and maybe recognizable in the contemplation of a mine at night.
Part IV keeps you awake in a continuous agitation upon receiving undistinguishable voices of elemental lamentations. A mind-poisoning lustre of ambiguous and spectral textures that brings to mind the voice manipulations experimented on the Vishuda Kali feat. Velehentor album “Myths about Srontgorrth”. Afterwards even the sound of your own voice could make you tremble. The intercourse of industrial and eerie ambient is also present on Part V, a mechanical Deutsch Nepal vibe played along the score of past Ah-Cama Sotz or X-NAVI:ET horror glitches. The avidity of the dungeon-like crawling and slithering noises exhaust an already appalled and contrived psyche, completely absorbed now in the Tungusk-ian atmosphere.
The technical details are all the more satisfying when you’re in possession of the CD: 300 copies in ecopack sleeve, graphics by Karolina Urbaniak, mastering by Lukasz Miernik and processing by Michal Porwet. The blast of the explosion from 1908 at Tunguska, a 1000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima one, left nothing like fragments from asteroids or meteorites, only devastated nature. Another terrestrial event transformed into myth and pictured in a plethora of words, colors and sounds, uniquely rendered in a genuine transcription by this Jarl/Envenomist collaboration.

Vital Weekly:
Erik Jarl is not a man to release a lot of music. I quite enjoyed his 'Parallel/Collapsing’, way back in Vital Weekly 401, and since then he also was reviewed in Vital Weekly 470 and 860, and on a few compilations. Here he works together with David Reed, also known as Envenomist, who has had releases on Brise Cul, Segerhuva, Chrondictic Sound and Bloodlust! Certainly two dark drone meisters who meet up here. Their CD is about events at Tunguska, in 1908: a large explosion that flattened 2,000 square kilometres of forest. Why it happened it was not clear, so that’s fertile ground for conspiratists worldwide: alien life form, asteroid or comet explosion or a black hole passing earth. Still a mystery that remains unsolved. I assume both gentlemen are at the controls of a bunch of synthesizers and sound effects and together they created five top-heavy pieces of dark synthesizer music. It’s not of the pure drone variation, starting and then stopping at some point, but it comes in waves; like a sea at night: you hear the waves, feel a cold wind in the face, but you can hardly see a thing. Another difference is that there is a bunch of looped, percussive sounds. Usually without much variation they simply tick away time, rather than setting a beat. It’s all spooky, mysterious and it could very well the soundtrack to the X-files or any other movie on the invasion of the body snatchers. It’s music that fits early dark autumn evening very well.

ChainDLK:
This album is a collaboration between Erik Jarl and Envenomist trying to reenact the Tunguska event 'a large explosion which occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River [’¦]. It flattened 2,000 km2 of the forest [’¦] The mystery is still unsolved’. To recreate this phenomenon they use drones, noises and field recording underlying the narrative aspect of this musical form, dark ambient, as boring in his abused form as enchanting in his well constructed form.
The first track, 'Tunguska Event Part I’, is an amazing juxtaposition of drones and noises able to evoke the unexplainable situation that inspired this release. As this release continues, 'Tunguska Event Part II’ features the noises of the emergency personnel that has to manage this events. 'Tunguska Event Part III’ sounds like the perplexity of someone that has to rationalize all the situation. 'Tunguska Event Part IV’ as the pain of the victims and 'Tunguska Event Part V’ as the question that has to be resolved.
This is an album that is completely focused in the cinematic property of sound and structure and, in the language closes to the canon of the genre, is something that could be enjoyed perhaps even by a casual listener curious enough not to be afraid by strange sounds. Recommended.

Theme albums can be in many ways a way towards finding a new language through music built up around a phenomenon or a subject of interest that some musicians find it viable to convey some interesting sounds through it. David who was working as Evenomist and Luasa Raelon and Erik who was in IRM, Skin Area and solo act Jarl has prepared an album that is somewhat a measure what can an noisy ambient music with psychoactive quality do in terms of telling the story of historical event which hasn’t been properly explained and until now it is stilll considered as an introduction to mysteries of nature and universe. What I mean by that is Tunguska event in Syberia, early XXth century.
5 tracks and 5 different pieces of music soaked in drone’y ambience with some spurts of pot-industrial beating and minimalistic evocative synthadelia.
Great soundtrack for old school space mind travel and attentive listening practice.

Musique Machine:
Long time contributors to the dark ambient scene, Jarl and Envenomist team up with Zoharum to put on disc a sonic reenactment of the Tunguska Event. This mysterious explosion over the Russian region of Tunguska has been studied and written about for the past 100 years, Cold, synthy, and low, Jarl and Envenomist capture the space and mystery around the event quite well. Spread over five tracks, this sonic journey takes the listener back in time to the cold, bleak, Russian woods where the mysterious explosion flattened almost 900 sq mi without warning.
Fading in with a low, slowly shimmering buzz, the higher accents paint a picture of an early morning sun over Tunguska on June 17, 1908. Subtle bass hits hint at impending doom while quickly fluttering loops suggest birds as main witnesses to the event. The following darkness may play out as the event itself. Suggestive tones and allusive loops leave the experience open to interpretation. Echoed claps feel like falling trees in the resulting shock wave. Higher notes bring about a sense of urgency, probably due to a similarity to modern ambulance sirens. These stand in stark contrast to the grim lows that make up the album’s core. From here, The Tunguska Event takes on a horror movie score feel. Near shrieks drone and waiver while pulsing synths build tension. Deepening lows play against slowly bubbling mids and thicken the mystery contained within the sonic soup. Ending with sounds straight from space, Jarl and Envenomist close off their interpretation with a drifting, haunting otherworldness.
Capturing the mystery and darkness of the event, Jarl/Envenomist’s Tunguska Event engages the listener without overpowering. Allowing one to feel and interpret the evidence and reenactment as they wish instead of forcing it, Jarl/Envenomist craft an album worthy of repeated listens. And, with all good records, the more one listens, the more one discovers inside.

Szwedzko-amerykańską kolaboracja wydana nakładem polskiej wytwórni od samego początku słuchania zrobiła na mnie duże wrażenie. Eric Jarl znany Wam zapewne z IRM czy też Skin Area połączył swe dźwięki z Davidem Reedem (Envenomist, Luasa Raelon) by przedstawić nam własną wizję katastrofy tunguskiej która miała miejsce 30 czerwca 1908 roku. Wiele informacji o tej ogromnej eksplozji można znaleźć w Internecie, co myślę najważniejsze i najfajniejsze jest to że ta historia do dzisiaj nie została wyjaśniona i krąży na jej temat wiele teorii i domysłów.
Dla twórców dark ambientu to wydarzenie jest wręcz wymarzone do dźwiękowej rekonstrukcji. Przeczytałem gdzieź że płyta jest zbyt monotonna ale nie mogą się z tym zgodzić. Album trzyma w napięciu od początku do końca nie pozostawiając słuchacza w obojętności. Mamy tutaj 5 długich mrocznych kompozycji zbudowanych na podstawie dark ambientowych dronów i industrialnych ozdobników którym wtórują pulsująco-wibrujące rytmy. Najtrafniej by ją opisać pasuje mi tutaj określenie muzyki nie z tego świata co oczywiste fani kosmicznych kolaży obowiązkowo powinni ją bliżej poznać. Całość posiada swoją odpowiednią dramaturgię okraszoną jakże potrzebną tajemnicą i niepokojem. Fajnie że obaj panowie potraktowali to historię po swojemu tzn. nadal słuchacze nie są pewni przyczyn oraz całego przebiegu tej niezwykłej historii. Wydawnictwo na pewno jest godne polecenia nie tylko dla fanów gatunku, gdyż jest to temat tak uniwersalny i ciekawy że każdy powinien je poznać i zmierzyć się z nim ze słuchawkami na uszach. Tak smakuje mi najlepiej. Jeśli lubujecie się w nagraniach choćby z oficyny Cryo Chamber posłuchajcie „Tunguska Event”. Wrażenie gwarantowane albo zwrot pieniędzy? Będzie Pan zadowolony! 🙂

Das Tunguska-Ereignis ist ein weit bekanntes Phänomen, das allerdings bis heute ungeklärt geblieben ist. Tatsächlich gab es im Jahr 1908 in Sibirien eine Explosion, die riesige Waldflächen in Mitleidenschaft gezogen hat, was auch noch etliche Jahre später zu sehen war. Da es sich um ein so gut wie nicht besiedeltes Gebiet handelte, gab es nur wenige direkte Augenzeugen, obwohl das Phänomen auch hunderte Kilometer entfernt noch wahrgenommen wurde. Heutige technische Möglichkeiten einer Erfassung von einem Phänomen wie diesem, gab es natürlich noch nicht. Zahlreiche Wissenschaftler haben sich seit damals an Erklärungen gewagt, ohne dass sich bisher eine feste Deutung etablieren konnte. Die Explosion eines Meteoriten in der Atmosphäre oder eine große Gasexplosion wurden als Ursachen ins Spiel gebracht aber nie einwandfrei bestätigt. Aufgrund der fehlenden Erklärungen schossen irgendwann natürlich auch Spekulationen ins Kraut, es habe sich hierbei um einen UFO-Absturz gehandelt bzw. geheime Experimente hätten das Phänomen ausgelöst. Somit ist das Tunguska-Ereignis heute auch jedem Fan von ERICH VON DÄNIKEN bis hin zu Mystery-Serien wie AKTE X bekannt; d.h. es handelt sich mittlerweile um ein Stück Popkultur, das auch schon andernorts in der Musik verarbeitet wurde.
ERIK JARL, der schon öfter mit SKIN AREA kollaborierte und Teil von IRM ist, sowie DAVID REED (ENVENOMIST) haben sich nun zu einer europäischen/amerikanischen Zusammenarbeit entschlossen, um das Ereignis für sich musikalisch zu verwerten. Herausgekommen ist eine instrumentale Ambient-Platte, die das Unerklärliche, Fremde – vielleicht auch Kosmische – an dem Ereignis aufnimmt und in seltsame, abstrakte Klanglandschaften verwandelt. Teils scharfkantige, atonale Drones, ein ab und zu wie Herzschläge oder düstere Echolote klingendes Pochen und pulsierende, wirbelnde Elektrosounds lassen eine unwirkliche Atmosphäre vor den Augen erstehen, die wie eine musikalische Beschreibung des Ereignisses und des Nachglühens der Explosion in der sibirischen Sommernacht wirkt. Da auf organische Klänge und melodische bzw. konventionelle Arrangements vollends verzichtet wird, konzentriert man sich auf die Sichtweise, dass es sich um ein Phänomen handelt, das von Kräften ausging, die nicht im normalen menschlichen Rahmen liegen bzw. denen gegenüber der Mensch nur staunend und unverständig agieren kann. Dabei versteht man es über die Laufzeit hinweg, eine gewisse Dynamik und auch Druck zu erzeugen, gerade wenn das drängende Pochen zur Mitte des Albums hin auftaucht. Einer bestimmten Erklärung wenden sich die beiden musikalisch oder durch die Titel der Stücke erkennbar allerdings auch nicht zu, obwohl das Cover-Artwork die Meteoriten-Theorie betont. Insgesamt betrachtet eine solide und runde Sache.

Necroweb:
Eine Kollaboration liegt nun mit folgendem Tonträger vor, wo sich die Musiker von Jarl und Envenomist zusammengefunden haben. Dabei wurde der inhaltliche Aspekt auf fünf Abschnitte unterteilt, und wie man anhand der Titelgebung schon deuten kann, so basiert die thematische Abhandlung auf genau jenem Ereignis aus dem Jahre 1908. Damals gab es in Sibirien eine heftige Explosion, deren Ursache bis heute nicht geklärt ist. Dies bleibt wohl eines der großen Rätsel der Menschheit. Die Spekulationen reichen dabei bis hin zu einem Kometeneinschlag, wobei hingegen der musikalische Aspekt hier eindeutig ist – “Tunguska Event” ist nämlich eine Publikation, die für mich eigentlich eher uninteressant schien. Aber dieses Vorurteil lässt sich zum Glück überaus schnell revidieren, denn was die beiden Akteure kreiert haben, sind wider Erwarten vorbildliche Klanglandschaften von mysteriöser Beschaffenheit, die in gewissen Momenten ebenso Bestandteile von Unruhe und Bedrohlichkeit bergen. Der nebulöse Charakter verfehlt dabei keinesfalls seine Wirkung, denn bereits nach kurzer Zeit nimmt “Tunguska Event” gefangen und lässt Bilder vor dem geistigen Auge erscheinen, deren erschreckender Fundus eine gelungene Begleitung zur Thematik darstellt.
“Tunguska Event” vermag mich weit mehr zu begeistern, als wie ich es erwartet habe. Gerade die Arbeiten unter dem Namen Jarl (IRM, Skin Area) haben mich nicht wirklich ansprechen können, etwas, was sich nun eventuell noch ändern könnte. Unter der Fahne von Zoharum ist diese Publikation auf jeden Fall bestens aufgehoben und es würde mich tierisch freuen, in Zukunft noch weitere prächtige Releases von dieser Sorte besprechen zu dürfen. Wer eine ansprechende Dosis Drone sucht und auch gerne etwas über den Tellerrand schaut, der wird in diesem Fall fündig – meine Empfehlung!

Il cosiddetto “evento di Tunguska” ebbe luogo il 30 giugno 1908 in Siberia. Fu causato dall’esplosione di un meteorite. Le conseguenze furono catastrofiche in quanto vennero abbattuti 60-80 milioni di alberi su una superficie di 2150 chilometri quadrati. Sono sorte numerose teorie a proposito di questa catastrofe. Alcuni scienziati sostengono che si sia trattato di un asteroide o di una cometa oppure del passaggio di un buco nero vicino alla Terra. Non si è mai riusciti a risolvere il mistero. Ora è uscito da poco un album dell’etichetta polacca Zoharum dedicato a questo enigmatico avvenimento. Il musicista ambient Erik Jarl – con alle spalle un interessante album – assieme a David Reed aka Envenomist hanno deciso di unire le forze per creare un commento sonoro all”evento di Tungunska”. “The Tungunska” event comprende una sola lunga traccia divisa in 5 parti, un trip catartico e ipnotico che ci mette in contatto con altri livelli di coscienza. La musica è oscura, cupa e sperimentale, un flusso ininterrotto e surreale di drones. Si tratta di un’elettronica che ricorda i Coil liquidi e minimali di “Time Machines”, quelli influenzati dalla cosmica tedesca. Possiamo ascoltare così bordoni e pulsazioni industrial che evocano scenari di desolazione e distruzione. Una musica in realtà non lontana da quello che facevano i pionieri Cluster – storica formazione di Krautrock – negli anni ’70, un gruppo seminale che ha anticipatp tutto il dark-ambient e l’industrial. “Tugunska Event” esce in una bella confezione digipack e in un’edizione limitata di 300 copie. Das Tunguska-Ereignis: am Morgen des 30. Juni 1908 ereigneten sich im sibirischen Jenisseisk mehrere Explosionen, die auf einer Fläche von gut 2.000 km² mehrere Millionen – man spricht von 60 mio. – Bäume umknickten. Noch 500 km entfernt sollen Erschütterungen spürbar und ein Feuerschein sichtbar gewesen sein. Bislang konnte nicht geklärt werden, ob es sich um einen Asteroideneinschlag, einen vorbeiziehenden Kometen, einen Vulkanausbruch oder etwas anderes als Ursache handelte.
Eben diesem Ereignis nimmt sich vorliegendes Album – Zoharum-typisch im ästhetischen Eco-Pack – an. Die beiden Macher – Erik Jarl und David Reed – verstehen es, die Thematik mit spannenden, auch mal lauteren, Drones umzusetzen und präsentieren einen fünfteiligen, düsteren Epos, der ebenso mysteriös daherkommt, wie das ursprüngliche Ereignis auch.
Vor dem geistigen Auge tauchen immer wieder riesige Flächen abgeknickter Bäume auf – eine gespenstige Szenerie, auf die man sich einlassen, und die man gewähren lassen muß! Alles in allem: faszinierend!

Inspirados en el misterioso y sobrecogedor suceso ocurrido en el 30 de junio de 1908 en Tunguska, donde una terrible y desoladora explosión dejó devastada una inmensa área siberiana de terreno boscoso en Rusia, los geniales artistas Erik Jarl y David Reed, Jarl y Envenomist, han dado forma y obscura belleza musical al extraordinario álbum “Tunguska Event” publicado a finales del mes de octubre a través del prestigioso sello discográfico polaco ZOHARUM RECORDS en una edición limitada de 300 unidades en ecopak CD de seis paneles. Con un siniestro diseño de portada creado por Karolina Urbaniak haciendo uso de sus propias fotografías, esta impactante edición del álbum “Tunguska Event” presenta una admirable abstracción estética de lo misterioso a través de lo visual que prolonga su inquietud en otros cuatro paneles. Vertebrado en cinco temas que fascinarán a los melómanos lectores de Lux Atenea Webzine afines a la escena ambient más selecta, la inmersión en esta obscura niebla del pasado recreada con maestría por David Reed y Erik Jarl comenzará con la impresionante composición “Tunguska Event Part I” donde el misterio se palpa como ruptura de la realidad en cuanto se materializa incuestionablemente ante nuestros ojos. Las sombras empiezan a extenderse exterior e interiormente, presentándose el tema “Tunguska Event Part V” como ese vacío interior tan inescrutable como el universo mental del inconsciente que vuelve a oscurecer la mente del individuo, reclamando de nuevo los espacios perdidos por la Razón como los ríos cuando son reconducidos de su cauce natural, recuperando con el tiempo su curso en cuanto llega la primera crecida importante de sus aguas. “Tunguska Event”, talentosa inspiración musical basada en uno de los grandes misterios del siglo XX. ¡¡¡Disfrútenlo!!!

Tunguska Event to efekt współpracy szwedzko-amerykańskiej. Erik Jarl, znany z nagrań IRM, Skin Area, czy wreszcie pod szyldem Jarl, połączył twórcze siły z Davidem Reedem (Envenomist, Luasa Raelon). Temat przewodni panowie wybrali bardzo ciekawy, bo czyż tajemnica katastrofy tunguskiej nie porusza wyobraźni od prawie stu lat? Pięć długich kompozycji opartych zostało o ambientowy podkład. Z tej dość jednostajnej warstwy wyraźnie wybijają się industrialne naleciałości, czasem wręcz uporczywie wiercą w strukturach, powodując irytację. Gdzieś w tle pojawia się dronowy szlif, eksplorujący rosyjską tajgę. Innym razem dostajemy monolityczny, przyciężkawy fragment. Trochę tu bezkształtnej masy, jakby twórcom brakowało pomysłów na urozmaicenie. Zresztą ciężko zrealizować muzykę około ilustracyjną, jeśli istnieją różne teorie, dotyczące przyczyn syberyjskiego wydarzenia. Niewątpliwie Jarl i Reed opanowali formę, ale nie zapanowali nad klimatem i stopniowaniem napięcia oraz nie uniknęli zbyt dusznego, monotonnego nastroju. Dostajemy przez to trochę zbyt zachowawczy album, który do obranego przez twórców tak ciekawego tematu niestety niewiele wnosi.

Hace ya más de un siglo, la ciudad rusa de Tunguska fue víctima de un inexplicable y estremecedor suceso. En junio de 1908 se produjo una tremenda explosión que generó un fragor telúrico sin precedentes, alarmando a parte de las naciones más importantes del planeta. Lo más interesante del caso es que nadie supo determinar cuál fue la causa de este hecho, sólo se plantearon hipótesis que intentaban justificarlo -una de ellas fue la caída de un meteorito-, pero no quedaron pruebas concluyentes que lo constatase. El físico Ettore Majorana todavía andaba lejos de formular los planteamientos de la bomba atómica, y los zares rusos tampoco se molestaron demasiado en indagar las razones de este estallido que arrasó todo lo que había ublicado en kilómetros a la redonda, ya que la fulminante explosión acaeció cerca del río Podkamennaya, una zona por aquel entonces deshabitada.
Los artistas experimentales David Reed, responsable del proyecto Envenomist, y Erik Jarl, han unido su destreza y estilo frente a los sintetizadores para dar forma a un disco repleto de misterio y expectación que recibe como título el nombre del misterioso suceso anteriormente comentado, “Tunguska Event”.
Este CD consta de cinco cortes comprendidos cada uno en torno a los diez minutos de duración. En ellos se desarrollan paisajes acústicos lineales y desquiciantes aderezados con percusiones intermitentes que se encuadran perfectamente dentro del dark ambient. Su estilo puede recordarnos a algunos trabajos de los británicos Zoviet France o el mismísimo Lustmord.
Texturas frías e inquietantes que ejemplifican con precisión el desconcertante y misterioso suceso de Tunguska. Un disco que mantiene la tensión de principio a fin, controlando magistralmente la incertidumbre.Jarl/Envenomist – „Tunguska Event”
Su estructura compositiva se establece a base de drones que sedimentan una base sólida sobre la que se edifican todo tipo de recursos sonoros alterados.
“Tunguska Event” supone la primera colaboración entre ambos artistas.
